Well control knowledge training is a core link in ensuring operational safety in the oil and gas industry, covering multiple dimensions such as formation pressure control, equipment operation, and risk management. The following systematically analyzes the key points of training from four aspects: basic theory, equipment operation, risk identification, and job responsibilities.
I.Basic Theories and Core Concepts of Well Control
1. The definition and classification of Well Control management Well Control (Well Control) refers to through technical means to maintain the dynamic balance of wellbore pressure and formation pressure, prevent invading wellbore formation fluid. International association of petroleum engineers (SPE) well control can be divided into three:
Primary well control: hydrostatic pressure balance formation pressure by drilling fluid column (formula: Ph=0.00981×ρ×HPh=0.00981×ρ×H, here, ρ represents the density of the drilling fluid and H represents the vertical depth).
Secondary well control: overflow after using the bop closed wellhead.
Tertiary well control: blowout out of control after the rescue operation.
2.Key physical parameters
Hydrostatic pressure: The pressure generated by a stationary fluid, which is positively correlated with the density of the drilling fluid and the well depth. Fluctuating pressure: when tripping due to the additional pressure caused by the velocity changes, swabbing pressure can reduce the bottom hole pressure of 5 MPa.
Ⅱ. Well Control Equipment and Operating Specifications

2.On-site monitoring standards
Data collection: Record the liquid level in the circulating tank every 15 minutes (direct reading scale accuracy ±0.1m³) and the outlet flow rate (electromagnetic flowmeter error < 2%). Increased rate of abnormal response: liquid level after > 0.3 m³/h immediately report to the police, H₂S concentration > 10 PPM start the emergency exit.
Ⅲ. Risk Identification and Emergency Response
1. The overflow early warning signal system according to the SY/T 6426-2019 "technical specification well control, risk signal can be divided into three categories:
Indirect display: Sudden increase in drilling rate (such as drilling rate in sandstone layers > 30m/h), pump pressure drop > 2MPa.
Direct display: drilling fluid density decreased > 0.05 g/cm after chlorine root, spurt > 500 mg/L.
Serious shows: wellhead continuous spillover quantity after > 2 m³/min.
2.Well shutdown operation process
Implement the "hard well closure" principle:
Stop the pump to lift drill, closing the blowout preventer (action time < 45 seconds)
b. Record the shut-in pressure, casing pressure (0.1 MPa) precision.
c. Calculate formation pressure: Pp=Pd+0.00981×ρm×HPp=Pd+0.00981×ρm×H (P_d is the standing pressure after well closure, and ρ_m is the current density of drilling fluid)
Ⅳ. Job Responsibilities and Competency Development
1. Multi-position collaborative system
Mud worker: Test the performance of drilling fluid every hour. If the density fluctuation exceeds 0.02g/cm³, a warning should be issued.
Driller: Monitor the changes in suspended weight and control the lifting speed of the column to be less than 0.5m/s.
Engineer: Organize low-pump speed tests and draw the well compression construction curve.
2.Training assessment standards
Theoretical assessment: Covers well control calculations (such as equivalent cycle density ECD calculation) and international standard provisions.
Practical operation assessment: Remote control console operation of blowout preventers (response time < 90 seconds), well drilling construction simulation.
Case teaching: Analyze the lessons of well control failure in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill accident and enhance risk awareness.
V. Regulations, Standards and Technological Innovation
1. Compliance requirements: Implement the annual inspection system for well control equipment as stipulated in Article 48 of the "Work Safety Law". The inspection cycle for API standard equipment should be no more than 3 months.
2. Technical development: intelligent well control system can be real-time monitoring of 300 + parameters, AI algorithms predict the overflow accuracy of 92% SPE paper data (2023).
Through systematic training, operators can master the full range of skills from the principle of pressure balance to emergency well closure, effectively preventing blowout accidents and ensuring the safety of oil and gas exploration and development.
