Classification Of Pressure Testing Pumps

Pressure testing pumps are key equipment used to test the strength and sealing performance of pressure vessels, pipelines, valves and other pressure-bearing devices by applying pressure to check their performance at specified pressures. According to different working principles and structural features, pressure testing pumps are mainly classified into the following major categories:

Ⅰ. Classification by working principle and power source

1.Manual pressure testing pump:

Characteristics: Powered by human force (driven by levers or handwheels), it generates high pressure through the reciprocating motion of pistons or plungers. It has a simple structure, is portable, and does not require external power, but the output pressure is limited by human strength, with high labor intensity and slow pressure increase.

Applicable scenarios: Suitable for low-pressure, small-capacity tests where there is no external power supply on site, such as small-scale tests or maintenance workshops for small pipes, radiators, and valves.

2. Electric pressure testing pump:

Characteristics: Powered by an electric motor, it uses a crankshaft connecting rod mechanism or worm gear to drive the reciprocating motion of the piston/plunger, automatically increasing pressure. It offers high pressure, large flow, and high efficiency, and can be equipped with pressure control, automatic pressure holding, and data recording functions, making operation effortless.

Applicable scenarios: Suitable for medium and high-pressure, large-volume tests, such as routine tests and type tests for industrial pipelines, boilers, high-pressure vessels, and petrochemical equipment.

3. Pneumatic pressure testing pump:

Features: Powered by compressed air (typically based on the principle of pneumatic boosters), it converts low-pressure air into high-pressure liquid output. It is explosion-proof and spark-free, suitable for hazardous environments; however, it requires a stable source of compressed air and generates relatively high noise.

Application scenarios: It is suitable for flammable and explosive sites (such as oil fields, chemical plants, and mines), or testing environments that require explosion-proof safety.

Ⅱ. Classification by structure and working mode

1. Plunger type pressure testing pump:

Characteristics: It uses a plunger to reciprocate in the pump cylinder, featuring excellent sealing performance and high pressure (up to over 1000 MPa), but with relatively low flow rate and slow pressure increase. It is usually designed with multiple plunger stages (such as three plunger stages) to enhance flow stability.

Application scenarios: Suitable for ultra-high pressure testing, such as autoclaves, scientific research experiments, military equipment, and high-pressure pipe fittings.

2. Piston type pressure testing pump:

Characteristics: It utilizes a piston to move within the cylinder, typically offering a larger flow rate, but the peak pressure is generally lower than that of the plunger type. The structure is relatively simple and easy to maintain.

Application scenarios: Suitable for medium to high pressure and larger volume testing, such as fire protection pipelines, HVAC systems, and general pressure vessels.

Ⅲ. Classified by Function and Usage

1. Conventional Pressure Testing Pump:

Basic pressure boosting function, used for general water pressure or oil pressure tests.

2.Numerical Control/Automatic Pressure Testing Pump:

Integrated with pressure sensors, PLC controllers, touch screens, etc. It can preset test curves, automatically increase pressure, maintain pressure, release pressure, record data, generate reports. High precision, suitable for standardized testing procedures.

3. Explosion-proof Pressure Testing Pump:

The motor or the entire machine adopts explosion-proof design, used in explosive environments (such as petroleum, chemical, and mining).

4. Ultra-high Pressure Pressure Testing Pump:

Designed specifically for extreme pressures (above 300 MPa), using special materials and multi-stage pressure boosting technology, often used for scientific research or special equipment testing.

Ⅳ. Classification by Medium

1.Water pressure test pump: Uses water as the test medium (usually with rust inhibitor added), the most commonly used, low cost, and clean.

2.Hydraulic pressure test pump: Uses hydraulic oil as the medium, good lubricity, suitable for precision equipment or systems sensitive to water.

3.Gas-liquid booster pump: Can output high-pressure gas or liquid, suitable for special testing requirements.

Key considerations for selecting a pressure test pump

1.Maximum working pressure: Needs to be higher than the pressure required for testing (generally leaving 1.2-1.5 times margin).

2.Flow rate: Affects the speed of pressure increase, large volume systems require higher flow rate.

3.Test medium: Select pump body material based on the corrosiveness and viscosity of the medium (such as stainless steel, carbon steel).

4.Accuracy and control: High-precision testing requires the use of numerical control models.

5.Portability: Manual or small electric pumps can be selected for field or on-site operations.

6.Safety features: Overpressure protection, automatic pressure relief, safety valve, etc.

Common application fields

1.Construction engineering: Water supply and drainage, fire protection, HVAC piping pressure test.

2.Industrial production: Pressure vessels, boilers, valves, pipe fittings, automotive braking system testing.

3.Energy industry: Oil pipelines, wellhead devices, gas equipment inspection.

4.Research and quality inspection: Material pressure resistance test, safety valve calibration, laboratory high-pressure simulation.

In summary, the selection of pressure test pumps should be determined based on testing pressure, medium, efficiency requirements, and environmental conditions. For high-pressure, automation, or explosion-proof scenarios, it is recommended to consult professional suppliers to ensure equipment compatibility and safety.
