- Functions include sealing the pipe string (half-closure), fully sealing the wellhead (full closure), and emergency cutting of the drill pipe with the shear ram.
- Four-way and casing head: Connects the wellbore to surface equipment, withstands pressure and distributes fluids.
2. Control System
- Hydraulic drive system: Composed of a remote control console (at least 25m from the wellhead), a driller's control console, and auxiliary remote control devices, enabling rapid well closure within 10 seconds.
- Core components: Accumulator, directional control valve, air line bundle, and full-closure rams require anti-misoperation protection.
3. Well Control Manifolds
- Throttle manifold: Controls wellhead back pressure through adjustable throttle valves to balance formation pressure.
- Kill manifold: High-pressure pumps inject kill fluid to restore pressure balance at the bottom of the well.
- Blowout line: Extends to a safe area and is equipped with an ignition device at the end to guide the combustion of flammable gases.
4. Internal Blowout Prevention Tools
- Drill pipe check valves (arrow-shaped/spherical): Prevent upward flow of fluid within the pipe string.
- Rotary valves (on top and bottom of the drill pipe): Emergency closure of the drill pipe's internal passage.
- Bypass valve: Establishes a circulation path when the drill string is blocked.
5. Monitoring and Alarm System
- Real-time monitoring parameters: Drilling fluid return volume, fluid level, density, temperature, H₂S concentration.
- Alarm thresholds: Automatic activation of sound and light alarms and emergency procedures when H₂S exceeds 20ppm.
6. Auxiliary Equipment
- Separation and treatment equipment: Drilling fluid gas separators, degassers, vacuum degassers, to remove invading gases.
- Weighting devices: Rapidly adjust the density of kill fluid (e.g., stop drilling and add weight if gas invasion is detected).
- Automatic mud injection system: Maintains annular fluid level during pipe handling to prevent suction overflow.
7. Special Equipment
- Rotary control head: Dynamic sealing of rotating drill pipe during underbalanced drilling.
- Pressure-controlled pipe handling equipment: Controls pipe string pressure during pressure operations.
II. Collaborative Working Mechanism: From Early Warning to Emergency Rescue
Well control equipment achieves three-level defense through the linkage of multiple modules:
1. Primary Defense (Monitoring and Early Warning)
- Level gauges and flow meters detect early signs of overflow (such as a 0.5 m³ drop in liquid level triggering an alarm), buying precious time for well shut-in.
2. Secondary Defense (Rapid Well Control)
- Upon detecting an overflow, the control system closes the blowout preventer within 30 seconds, the choke manifold regulates the casing pressure, and the kill manifold injects high-density drilling fluid.
3. Tertiary Defense (Accident Management)
- In case of an uncontrolled blowout, the blowdown line relieves pressure, fire-fighting equipment is deployed, and the shear ram cuts the drill string to seal the well.
Case: Typical operation process of double-blowout preventer:
1. Hydraulic closure of the half-closing ram to clamp the drill pipe;
2. Adjust the choke valve to stabilize the casing pressure;
3. Pump in weighted mud with the well-killing pump to displace the contaminated fluid.
III. Technological Evolution and Security Standards
- Intelligent trend: Modern systems integrate sensor networks with AI algorithms to predict blowout risks (such as overflow models based on pressure fluctuations) and automatically shut in wells.
- Ultra-high pressure development: Blowout preventer pressure ratings reach 140 MPa (such as 105 MPa annular blowout preventers for deep wells), and the bore diameter expands to 680 mm.
- Regulatory mandatory requirements:
- After installation, blowout preventers must be pressure tested at 70% to 100% of the rated pressure (stabilized for 30 minutes, with a pressure drop of no more than 0.7 MPa);
- Sulfur-containing wells must be equipped with positive pressure breathing apparatus and fixed H₂S detectors.
